The Greek legend of Sisyphus tells of a king who escaped death only to be punished by the gods. Sisyphus was tasked to roll an huge boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down every time it neared the top for eternity.
Our Sisyphus came to the Sanctuary from another rescue where he had reportedly tested positive for feline leukemia. We love of Felvies. They have their own special area at the Sanctuary and a network of wonderful fosters.
BUT
We always verify testing in house with IDEXX equipment. Sisyphus tested negative on intake. To make sure that we did not miss something or do the test wrong we followed up with a second test 30 days later. Once again it showed negative for feline leukemia.
We are overly cautious at the Sanctuary. All of our cats are given annual FELV vaccines. The vaccines are very effective at protecting cats, but not full proof. We are very careful about who is allowed on our main adoption floor.
So we sent Sisyphus’ blood out to the lab for a full PCR test. The results showed that Sisyphus had zero trace of the virus in his system! He was completely negative for felv. He was deemed ready for the adoption floor.
Sisyphus has escaped death and is now bearing his “punishment” at the Sanctuary until he finds a home. It’s a pretty nice place to wait with food, friends, love, and safety.
Sisyphus is a big boy. He is 5 years old. He was neutered by the other rescue shortly before he came into our care this fall. He has a dark ticked tabby coat which displays a banded pattern in his fur. Sisyphus may look like he’s a little grumpy, but he’s an absolute lover. He enjoys pets, scritches and cuddles. He also enjoys the company of other cats. He decided that his acclimation to the adoption floor would be quick and without any bother. He’s been a purrfect gentleman.
This handsome stern faced lover boy deserves to be released from his punishment by finding his home.
